I have always heard that the Bf109 was a real handful to land even with wind right down the runway. I think the pilot did a phenomenal job of staying upright and relatively under control. That canted gear and weird angle. Also, look at how much of the rubber is actually in contact with the ground. The braking must just be terrible. Every landing is an event!

It is too easy to imagine the pilot muttering, "Schiesse."

Jag var 12 år när jag åkte denna. Innan slutet på 6:an åkte jag dit med min mor som var busschafför och skolklassen. Där så var vi i grupper och jag tappade bort min grupp och jag försökte leta efter dem men hittade dem bara inte letat typ överallt från spellbutiken till julborden men jag var aldrig uppe på berget och när jag såg upp på Atmosfear så kom min hjärna på en galen idé. Om jag åker Atmosfear så har jag utsikt över hela Liseberg då måste jag kunna se min grupp är. Så det blev mitt mål och jag visste inte vad Atmosfear funkade jag trodde man var där uppe o tittade på utsikten och när jag inte såg min grupp och bergade titta rakt ner så blev jag bara "Oh oh, åh nej vad har jag gjort" och det satt ingen jämte mig mot min vänstra sida men var en gubbe som sat jämte mig från höger och jag frågade honom "Vad gör jag nu?" och han sade: "Titta bara rakt fram och slappna av" och det gjorde jag och precis nör jag slapnade av, så släpptes det och jag kände som att allt mitt blod bara rusade up to hjärnan på mig. Det kändes så läskigt och det roligaste var min grupp var vid Uppsvinget så hade jag tittat lite åt höger hade jag sett dem. Och min mor som åkte lisebergs hjulet såg min sko som hon kände igen så hon såg mig som 12 år åka Atmosfear. Det var det mest häftigaste och läskigaste åkturen i mitt liv. Haha.

I think the 109 killed a lot of its pilots back in the day. They are notoriously difficult on take-offs and landings and not very forgiving.

I read that this was somewhat how 11% of the Bf 109s were lost in WWII.

I vaguely remember reading that a British (I think) test pilot called the 109 landing characteristics “malicious”. I can’t remember where I read that sadly, perhaps someone here can recall reading it. I’m not singling out that aircraft, I know the Spitfire was challenging too, most especially when landing on a carrier, whereas a 190 or Hurricane were far more forgiving.

Le Me109 avait la fâcheuse habitude de passer sur le dos dans cette configuration et de tuer son pilote... Il y en a un qui a eu beaucoup de chance... Il se dit que plus de pilotes de Me109 sont mort ainsi par accident qu' au combat...
